Bruno Mars: 1 Man, 1 Year, 7 Grammy Nominations

Prior to 2010, many Americans had never heard of the name Bruno Mars. Now, his work is so prominent that you may be listening to a song he worked on right now. As a singer, songwriter, and producer he has had his hands on many 2010 chart-toppers. While writing and performing with the likes of Travie McCoy, B.o.B. and Cee Lo Green, Mars was also working on his debut album Doo-Wops & Hooligans.

Doo-Wops & Hooligans was released in October and has reached the #3 position on the Billboard 200. Bruno’s first single “Just the Way You Are” made it to the top of the Billboard Hot 100. This album has a very eclectic sound and seems to have influences from many genres.  The album starts with his second single, “Grenade”, a simplistic blues tune about a man who would do anything for the woman he loves (but she won’t do the same) and goes into an old school rock tune, “Runaway Baby”, and a reggae-inspired collaboration with Damian Marley titled “Liquor Store Blues”. Bruno Mars allows listeners into his soul as he sings about things like heartbreak and friendship.

As reported on RollingStone.com, songs he had a hand in creating were some of the best-selling singles of 2010. His “Just the Way You Are” claimed #3 on Amazon’s Top-Selling Singles of 2010 list and #18 on iTunes’ Top-Selling Singles of 2010 list. The collaboration with Travie McCoy, “Billionaire”, is ranked #15 and #12 respectively. Bruno Mars has been nominated for seven Grammy Awards including Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for “Just the Way You Are”. Mars has also been nominated for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Producer of the Year.

Some may think of Bruno Mars as an overnight celebrity, but he has been working in the music industry since he was seventeen years old. The year 2010 has been a successful year for him and allowed him to break out into the mainstream music scene. He has proved himself a force to be reckoned with in the music industry and is possibly the biggest breakout star of the year.  Can Mars shine past Grammy veterans like Eminem, Michael Jackson, Jay-Z, and Alicia Keys?
